Garfagnana is a long and wide valley of Tuscany along the course of the river Serchio, in centre of Italy between the Northern Appennin and the Apuan Alps; the valley is isolated from big towns and main transport links, whose pollution and chaos remain cut off; but an exellent network of roads and rails make Garfagnana an ideal reference area for who goes into town for working, studying or amusement ( Lucca 0.5 h, Versilia 1 h, Pisa 1.5 h, Firenze 2 h, Genova 2.5 h, Milano 3 h, Venezia 4 h, Roma 4.5 h).

Coming from abroad, the best is to arrive in one of the nearest airports where you can easily rent a car for the last part of the travel: Pisa, Firenze, Genova, Milano Malpensa e Milano Orio al Serio, Bologna, Roma. Some low cost airlines use these airports
By car, the simplest and safest way is to reach Lucca:
From the North, coming from Genova/Milano, through A 15 or A 12 merging with A 11 at Viareggio or, coming from Bologna, through A1 and then A 11;
From the South through A 1 and then A 11 or through Aurelian Way, A 12 and then A 11.



It should be arriving at Lucca, take the wide SS 12 northward and near Borgo a Mozzano take SR 445 toward Castelnuovo di Garfagnana; arrived at the village, take SP 69 toward Careggine and after less than two km, on your left, you'll meet the Azienda Il Podere. It's 50 km far from Lucca, for a 45 minutes trip.
More fashionable and scenic ways, for nature and mountain roads lovers, are:
A 12 Versilia/Forte dei Marmi exit, continuing toward Serravezza - Castelnuovo di Garfagnana: you'll be delighted at the Apuan Alps sight, you'll see Versilia from 800 metres high, the Carrara's marble mines, the village and the lake of Isola Santa - 50 minutes;
A 15 Aulla exit, continuing towards Fivizzano - Casola Lunigiana - Castelnuovo di Garfagnana: you'll be delighted at the northern solpe of the Apuan Alps, Garfagnana's marble mines, the lake of Gramolazzo - 75 minutes

By train Garfagnana is connected by the Pisa/Lucca/Aulla railway with several daily rides. The nearest station is in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. (Consult the timetables on www.trenitalia.it )
